1992 Toyota Celica Front Wheel Drive Manual 188000 miles

Coming home from work last evening, my son coasted down the hill with the clutch in, then when he got to the driveway he put it in first gear and I am sure he was going to fast and had to almost force it in. When he did it made a small clunking sound and guess what, now I have nothing, It will start now without the clutch pushed in, usually it wont. The shifter feels normal, not real loose and it will go in any gear with the clutch out. All gears, including 3rd and reverse. No sounds to speak of when moving the shifter or putting the clutch in or out. Any ideas would be great. Kids! At least he told me what he did so I knew where to begin. Help please. I am a rear wheel drive backyard mechanic, so I know quite a bit, just not about a clutch and manual tranny. At least if you can give me a thing or two to try to narrow it down a bit more than either tranny or clutch. That much I do know. Thank you for any help you can give, Sandy

Hi there,

I would be thinking that he has torn the center out of the clutch or the input shaft has broken, I would be removing the gear box to inspect for this damage.
