I have a 2000 Solara (same as Camry) It has the original battery and has always started immediatley. Today (temperature 70F) when I turned key all I heard was a clicking sound. A very rapid ticking sound (I think the starter solenoid) but the car did not turn over or start. I tried jumping it but it did the same thing. What could it be. Thanks.

I would definately suspect the starter solenoid. An easy shade tree way to check that is have a buddy turn the key over and hit the starter with a hammer. If after a couple of solid hits the car starts then you need a new starter. While under there check the electrical connections and see if you can wiggle the starter at all. Sometimes the starter will get missalligned and need to be re-tightened or shimmed.

Later in the day I checked the voltage (12.2v) which is low so I guess the 8.5 year old battery is needing replacement. I actually tried to start it and it turned over for a second and then the solenoid started tapping again. I got a new battery and everything worked normally.
