Your vehicle has power brakes which use engine vacuum to assist braking. When the brake booster develops a small air leak, sometimes a hissing noise can be heard. If it is the brake booster, it'll only get worse. So make plans to have it checked out by a professional ASAP.
One preliminary test you can perform to check the brake booster is as follows:
With the engine off, pump the brake pedal about 6 times and hold your foot firmly on the pedal. Start the engine. As the engine start the brake pedal (and your foot) should go down toward the floor. If it does this indicates that the booster is working (at this time). Remeber this is only one test--your technician will have more in depth tests to conduct.
The reason I'm stressing that you have a technician to look at it is because I recently repaired a vehicle with a faulty brake booster (it hissed when the brakes were applied). It passed the test outlined above, good right! Well, on the test drive I lost all power assit on two occasions. Replaced the booster. No more hissing noise and the booster now works just fine.
