Well I would have to state the obvious and say that the wiring to the battery is probably at fault. There are a lot of volts needing to run through those cables to get the engine started, takes a lot of torque to crank that thing over. I suggest replacing the wiring with the proper cables. You can also jumper the starter solenoid with a jumper wire (or screwdriver). If it engages then starter is not at fault.
