Hello I have a simple question about six mouths ago or so toke my car to my machanic and had him check my computer to see if any codes was showing up because my engine check light was on. And it showed bad egr not working. So he dissconncted my batt to clear it and waited 15 mins while it was running and the light came back on. Checked it again and the code said bad egr. My mechanic said dont worry about it untell u start having problems is he right? I am having rough iddle and now having pinging from time to time. Should I just replace it? Far as the pinging I haved been useing the middle grade to get the higher octane ill be greatfull if you can help.

Sounds like you need a new mechanic. A egr valve not working will cause engine ping. These typically do not work due to a bad egr solenoid. Its located under the intake on the rear side of the engine. The solenoid ususlly sticks closed causing your problem. Its relatively inexpensive to fix if you know what your doing. I think the part runs about $30 from toyota and should take less than an hour, including using a power probe to make sure its bad. Plus youll need to get it fixed if you want your car to pass emissions.
