My '93 Camry runs great when it first starts. It idles nice and smooth. However when I put it in drive or reverse it will really start to sputter and eventually staul out. I have made sure that the fuel system is good, checked the timing, tried adjusting the idle, checked the spark plugs and vaccum with no success. I do know that the check engine light is on, but I do not know how to check the fault codes. Could this be a problem with the throttle possitioning sensor? If not how do I check the fault codes.

Hi jeckler7275,

When the check engine light shows, you need to get it checked to find out what is wrong.

Under hood there is a diagnostic connector, flip it open you will see many pin points and inside the cap you would see the wiring point.

Use a pin or short wire to bridge the Te1 and E1 and turn ignition switch on.

Watch the check light and see how it blinks, long flashes = 10 while fast flashes = 1, count them and let me know. It will loop in a cycle and if more than 1 code is stored, there will be a lapse before the next one starts.

Thank you for your quick response.

I have checked the codes as you suggested. I got one long blink and two short ones. It repeated the same code over and over so I am assuming it was the only code.

Hi jeckler7275,

That means the code = 12, Engine speed (RPM) signal.

The distributor coil or ICM is not working well.
