I have a 2001 toyota 4runner 4x4 w/58,000 miles. As I approached the highway and was driving at 55 mph I disengaged the 4wheel (4H) drive button then the vehicle slowed down and stopped. I was able to shift it into 4L and drive slowly home. It will not shift out of 4wheel drive. Please help?

You should never disengage the 4x4 while moving, always put it in park, and then do it. I did that with a 4x4 ranger on time and screwed up the lock differential. The problem I had when I did that was that I was unable to put it back into 2wd. I got it fixed for about 600 bucks and it worked fine after that.
