I have a 1994 4runner which has been acting strange for a while. It doesn't want to shift into overdrive unless it's been warmed up for 30 min or I drive it for 20miles or so. It shifts fine when it's up to running temp but when cold it will not kick into overdrive at all. I tried changing the fluid and filter, didn't help, and I've read that it might be caused by a bad vehicle speed sensor? Any advice? Thanks

I own a '93 4Runner/V6/4WD/auto that displays the same phenomenon. When I inquired about it, I was told that there is a temperature sensing switch in the OD circuit that will not allow it to go into OD until a present temperature (transmission fluid?) Is reached. In other words it is operating normally. We live in an area that is very hilly, so I don't use OD until I get to the flatlands. It takes longer in winter than in summer before the trans shifts into OD.
I hope this is accurate, but check for some professional validation.

I have this same exact problem.
A transmission shop told me that the torque converter is not going into full lockup.
Does anyone have a solution to this issue?
Thanks, Bill
