I recently changed my timing belt and made extra sure all the timing marks were correctly positioned. The car would start idle for about five seconds and shut down. The gear on the crankshaft the belt goes around slides forward and comes off the notch out that it slides onto. What would cause this?

It may be a bad pulley or a bad tensioner. Recheck your work and check pulleys if you just bought a belt you should have gotten a kit because it gives everything you need. And tensioner should be replaced as well. By now you may have bent the valves because when a belt goes off on your engine it does that as it is an interference engine. You should rent a manual for replacing belt as instructions are quite specific and lengthy. See pictures.
