Have not been able to open tail gate for years, then all of a sudden I can open it, then I cannot, then I can. What is the problem here?

Bad ground or power in the wiring harness that feeds the gate. They break in the flex section between the bottom of the gate and the body. Not a hard repair, you remove the gate trim panel so you can test the wires at that end to determine which are broken and push the flex section loose then find and repair the broken wire(s) in the harness. I generally do not repair them in the flex area, I will cut, solder and shrink tube them on each end so the repaired area does not need to move.
