Engine Mechanical problem
2002 Subaru WRX 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Manual 92k miles

I have just purchased a 2002 Subaru WRX with 92,000 miles. I have heard that a timing belt failure could lead to expensive repairs. Should I replace it?

I got some estimates: $475.00 to replace it.
$1,100.00 to replace kit this include tensioners and a water pump (since you are into it anyway, I was told)
$150.00 to inspect the belt. The radiator has to come out?

Asking for advise; Thanks Tommy

Do it right. Cudos to the shop that recommended this way!
Yeah 1100 hundred is a lot. IF it was mine I would do it this way.

Verify what the warranty is. How long are the parts covered, how long is the labor covered.

I don't have any reason to believe there is a problem with the belt. What about the inspection, is that reliable, if it looks good, put the replacement off till later?

Inspection is not needed. The parts need to be changed at specified intervals or risk the result of ignoring it. What do you suppose they will say?
And would it matter?

The fact is that this is an interference engine. The scheduled period to replace it is 105,000 miles. How much of a gamble are you willing to take to see if it lasts long enough to prolong the repair versus trashing the engine?
