The check engine light came on today, while driving at normal in-town speeds, and shortly after that, the cruise control stopped working. I checked the manual, and it sounds as if the 'check engine light', which is constant, does not flash, could indicate a problem with the emissions controls, but apparently can occur if the gas cap isn't on tight. I checked the cap; seemed okay to me.

The cruise can apparently be inactivated if the control is bumped while starting the car, but should reset if the car is shut off, and re-started. Tried that, it didn't work.

It seems logical that the two failures may be somehow connected; anyone have an idea how? My dealeris 150 miles away, so I'm hoping for an option. thanks.

On a 2005 Legacy (like my GT Ltd), the cruise control is deactivated by the Check Engine light being on. This is so you won't ignore it...You should be able to get the computer codes read at most auto parts stores for free, or get an OBD II reader and do it yourself. With today's OBD II engine computers, you don't read flashes, you have to use a code reader.
