2001 Subaru Forester Confuse

started changing cv shaft i was about to replace the shaft but i notice a spring looking O ring was sticking out im trying to find out where does it go and if it goes inside de gap where the shaft goes will it fall down all the way or will it stay there while i put the shaft in.
