Transmission stuck in reverse will not shift?

I was in line dropping my kid off and was trying to leave, went to put it in drive and shifter stopped in reverse and is now not shifting into any gear. Looking it up it said possible shift linkage or interlock solenoid. Now my check engine light is on, and E-brake is on. Any other possible problems with solutions?

Hi,

Does the shifter move at all? Also, did the E brake turn on itself?

Here is what I suggest. Under the vehicle on the side of the transmission (driver's side) is where the shift cable attaches. There is a clip that holds it in place and attaches to a shift lever. Check to make sure nothing has come apart. See pic below

The one thing that has me confused at this point is the check engine light. I'm questioning if something different has happened. However, the easiest thing to check is what I suggested.

If that is in good condition and not the problem, we need to have the computer scanned for codes.

I realize most people don't own the scan tool used. However, some parts stores that lend tools often have them.
