Yesterday I was at the gas station and when I put the key in the ignition, I found the steering wheel had locked up. I thought nothing of it fixed it and went on but now the steering locks up every time I get on it. I'm confused cause it's so out of nowhere.

Hi,

When you say it locks up, do you mean it can't be turned? Or is the issue related to the key itself? Also, is there a clicking sound when you turn the steering wheel? I know there was a technical service bulletin related to a clicking sound when turning.

As far as the steering locking is concerned, it should when the vehicle is off, in park, and the key is removed. There is a lock actuator that does it. Take a look at pic 1.

Let me know.

Hi,

The idea that the steering locks and the key is locked as well may indicate an internal issue with the steering column itself.

Here is what I suggest: I would recommend having the can-bus scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, all the computers/modules are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan will retrieve codes regardless of the module storing them.

Here is a link explaining how it's done:

Let me know if that is something you can have done. Also, if the steering locks while driving, it certainly doesn't sound safe to drive. We need to figure out what is happening.

Take care,

Joe
