My car has a very odd steering problem where the wheel can be moved left and right about an inch without moving the tires. This is not much of a problem at lower speeds but on the highway or speeds over 45 the play in the wheel is very loose. Let’s just say your arms get very tired constantly having to readjust just to stay your lane. I’ve tried looking other places but no one has had the same problems. It is on the lower side for steering fluid and I hope to fix that tomorrow but it seems like it is a mechanical problem in the steering column. If anyone knows anything that might help it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Alec Conrad,

This sounds like you have one of the steering components loose like a tie rod or rack and pinion.

Here is a video that runs through how to check these pretty quickly. However, I would definitely get this taken care of because if the component is this loose then it is in danger of failure and this can cause a serious issue.

It is unlikely that it is the column on this vehicle however, if all other steering components check out, you will need to watch the steering shaft that comes through to the rack and see if there is no movement on the shaft when you are getting this small amount of play in the wheel.
