Any common issues with these? No codes, just steering is very hard to turn.

Here is a TSB that could help. As far as codes go did you do a CAN scan? This will go over the entire car and is not that bad to do. You can get a CAN scanner from Amazon for about $30.00.

Here is a video to show you how:

Subject
Troubleshooting intermittent Steering Assistance with Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Model

F01 (7 Series Sedan)
F02 (7 Series Sedan LWB)

F04 (7 Series Hybrid)

F06 (6 Series Gran Coupe)

F07 (5 Series Gran Tourismo)

F10 (5 Series Sedan)

F12 (6 Series Convertible)

F13 (6 Series Coupe)

SITUATION
Intermittent steering assistance failure
CAUSE
The power supply of the EPS control unit.
PROCEDURE
Perform a vehicle test with ISTA
Were any of the following fault memory entries found in the ICM - Integrated Chassis Management:

†0xD019BF - message fault (actual steering torque, driver, actuator, ID: AVL_STMOM_DV_ACT) †Timeout

†0xD015C4 - message fault (front axle electrical steering status, ID: ST_EST) - Timeout

†0xD016A5 - message fault (driving dynamics 02 check control display, ID: DISP_CC_DRDY_02) †Timeout

YES- Go to Step 2.

NO †continue diagnosis by performing the associated test plan in ISTA/D.

Note: No fault memory entries are entered in the EPS control unit with this fault pattern!

Work through the appropriate test module (ABL_DIT_AT3244_EPS_NOCOM_2) for the fault memory entries.
Before completing the repair, check the following connection/wiring issues and repair as necessary:
†EPS plug connections for correct latching.

†Release EPS plug connections, check for traces of water, dirt, corrosion, etc.

†Entire EPS wiring harness, both the signal and supply, for damage (e.g. chafing, rodent, etc.).

†Positive wire connection on the power distribution box and grounding cable on the body.

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

So, looking under the hood found this reservoir for ch11s which is usually for P/S fluid on many German cars. But I thought this was for hydraulic suspension but it turned out it was very low. I added some and now the steering is working but I don't see any leaks. Also, if this is an electronic steering how come it is taking fluid?

It is a combination steering with both electronic and hydraulic. Here is an exploded view with the part identification. I would get a flashlight and raise the front up to look for leaks. this guide can help. You might need to remove the lower panels.
