Starts and idles alright, but when I try to give any gas, or drive it, it spudders.

As described above, its starts just fine, and idles alright. But when I try to rev it a little, or drive at all, it starts to sputter, and can hardly get RPM's up. It came with a part in a box that was un-labeled, but I believe its a fuel filter. It looks like a small cylinder with a flat, triangle plate on the bottom with 3 screw holes and a little stem coming out of the cylinder. Would replacing this, and having the normal tune-up (plugs, oil, other liquids, fuses etc.) Fix the problem? (The car in the picture isn't mine, thats exactly how mine looks though, just less clean.)

I'll run to a place and see if they still do OBD1 scans, and see if any codes come up, I talked to the guy at Auto-Zone yesterday, and he said they can't get any OBD2 codes out of the car unless the Check Engine light is on, (and that they don't do OBD1 anyways.) Which I hadn't looked if it was on, due to the fact I obviously know theirs a problem, lol. I also noticed that for this car, it gets horrible gas mileage, because I have to floor the car just to pick up a little speed and keep up with traffic, or the gas gauge is off, because I went through a quarter tank of gas going 16 blocks.
