Starter replacement

I am trying to install a new starter on my vehicle and cannot remember how the the wiring goes back onto the starter. There is also a lead wire on the new starter that says do not remove but crimp it. The new starter and three studs on the end of it and I only recall removing two wires from it. Is there a wire for the third stud? Please help. When I put it back the way I thought it should go, it was started smoking from the area around the starter and would not crank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
