Starter replacement instructions needed

In the diagrams down below I have included the instructions for the removal of your vehicle's starter motor for you. The installation is going to be the same directions, only in reverse. One piece of advice I can give you is to disconnect your vehicle's battery before starting any work on your starter. Please go through this guide and get back to us with how everything turns out. Where is the starter located on the engine? Is it hard to remove and replace?

Hi Oldlegger, Starter is located at rear of engine below the intake manifold.

Here are removal procedures: Starter removal and installation Removal: 1 . Make sure you have the anti -theft code for the audio system and the navigation system (if equipped), then write down the audio presets. 2 . Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable. 3 . Remove exhaust pipe A.

4 . Remove the intake manifold bracket.

5 . Remove the harness clamps (A) and harness connector (B) from each clamp.

6 . Remove the two bolts securing the starter, then remove the starter from the engine.

7 . Disconnect the starter cable (A) from the B terminal. Disconnect the connector (B) from the S terminal, then remove the starter.

Installation: 1 . Install the starter cable (A) and connector (B). Make sure the starter cable crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect it.

2 . Install the starter, then loosely install the upper mounting bolt (A) and lower mounting bolt (B).

3 . Tighten the upper mounting bolt, then tighten the lower mounting bolt. 4 . Install the harness clamps (A) and harness connector (B) to each clamp.

5 . Install the intake manifold bracket.

6 . Install exhaust pipe A. Use new gaskets (B) and new self -locking nuts (C).

7 . Connect the positive cable to the battery first, then connect the negative cable. 8 . Start the engine to make sure the starter works properly. 9 . Enter the anti -theft code for the audio system and the navigation system (if equipped), then enter the audio presets. 10 . Set the clock (on vehicles without navigation).

Before we replaced it it would make a clicking sound and almost as if it wasn't getting powerbut we replaced starter and everything was fine I drove to mutple places and it started without a problem came home parked it and went back out only a few hours later and it was doing the exact same thing as before.. help i have no idea what it could be

Loose battery cable connection, or corroded cable making intermittent contact. Do you want to diagnose it or just have some guesses as to what is wrong? If you want to diagnose it, you'll need a digital voltmeter or preferably a test light, and a helper to turn the ignition switch.

Can I use a Mitsuba sm-74009 starter on my car listed above?

Looks like this starter is for a 2.4L engine and not your 1.7L engine so it would not fit. I attached a document showing all the OEM part numbers for this vehicle depending on model and transmission. Let us know if you have more questions. Thanks

I own a '96 Honda Civic Ex 4 cly, 2 door. One day I went to start the car and it did this sluggish thing but never started. I thought I needed a jump. Turns out the battery is fine. I took it to the Honda dealership and had a new starter put in (it was cheaper to buy the part for them but more convenient to have them install it). That was Friday morning. Car ran like a champ all weekend. Sunday night, I'm leaving work and it is doing that same sluggish start up...AGAIN, but never actually start up. I could not even pop the clutch and start it that way. Please, PLEASE tell me what's wrong with this thing!?! My main job is 8 minutes driving 1 hour walking, but my part time job is 30 miles away. Its bad enough that because I didn't buy Honda's part I have to pay them $100 just to look at it again...*bummer. You can email me at grantdaddy1@live.com with that answer.

If the starter is cranking slowly, you need to check the battery teminal and ground circuit connections.

If a jump start does not help, it could be the starter itself that is faulty (reman units are not 100 % trustworthy).

If a bump start did not help, that can mean a bad ignition switch. Are all dash indicator lights showing?

It could also be due to engine mechanical faults.

The car wont start unless I pop the clutch. If I try to start it with key it wont do anything. Lights dont go dim so I dont think its the battery.

Check the starter solenoid wire to see if it is loose. To test if it ies the starter, use a fused wire to apply battery voltage to the starter solenoid to test if it works. Ensure the gears are in neutral.

Did you check the clutch pedal switch. If it is faulty, it would disable the starting function.

need to know where the starter is on a 1.6liter engine. how do i replace it

The starter is located on the firewall side of the engine block, adjacent to the flywheel or torque converter housing. Early models, use a direct drive type starter, while the later models use a gear reduction starter.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and the starter motor cable at the positive terminal.
Remove the engine wire harness from the harness clip on the starter motor
Disconnect the cable from the B terminal on the solenoid, and the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.
Remove the starter motor by loosening the two attaching bolts.
To install, reverse the removal procedures: re-position the starter in place, replace bolts, tighten the starter-to-engine bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
Make sure that all wires are securely connected.

Can you tell me how to change the starter in my car? When I turn the key, no sound, but power. Lately, by tapping on starter housing, starter would engage once I turned key. Now no such luck.

To replace starter :
Disconnect battery negative terminals
Disconnect starter solenoid wire and battery cable.
Remove 2 bolts holding starter and it can be removed for replacement.
Reverse procedures for installation.
Note : If there are any items that are restricting removal of items described above, remove them accordingly.
