So, I am trying to fix my starter. I am not sure what has happened, but I parked it last night. Everything was fine. I woke up and went to start it and it cranks a little but then kicks out and grinds. I bought a pack of shims, and I tried them all and it still doing the same thing. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Dale, you aren't doing anything wrong. Chances are the Bendix is bad on the starter. That is what kicks out the drive gear to make contact with the flywheel. Other than that, you could have a loose starter or flywheel.

What I would recommend is to remove the starter and have it bench tested at a parts store. They will do it free of charge. Here is a link that explains how to remove and reinstall a starter motor. Make sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal before you work on the starter.

Let me know what you find.

So, I don't know why but I had a older bigger starter from a different truck that I had laying around my shop that I threw on it and now it's turning over fine. However, in the process of all this somewhere along the lines my fuel pump quick working I'm just completely unsure why but I got a new pump and am getting ready to put it In.

Hi Dale, it sounds like you have the same kind of luck as I do. Nothing is ever easy. LOL

Let me know if you get the pump working again or if there is anything I can do to help.

Take care,

Joe

Got it running fine now thanks for your help and being there If I needed it. A fresh second mind on things makes all the difference sometimes. Because with prices the way they are with everything I'll never be able to take my truck in to someone, so I'm forced to do it myself. So, thanks again Joe. Maybe I'll return the favor someday lol. Have a good day.

Dale,

You are very welcome. Believe me, it's a pleasure to help someone like you, and I plan to be here for a long time. LOL So, please feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome.

As far as prices are concerned, I couldn't agree more with you. I'm tired of everything costing so much. That is only one thing I am frustrated with in today's world, but I won't bother you with that. LOL

Again, take good care of yourself, and feel free to come back anytime.
