After 1/8 to 1/4 mile, the engine just shuts off?

The engine starts right up and idles and revs great. It is a Z24 with a five-speed stick. However, when I start to drive it, after 1/8 to 1/4 mile, the engine just dies, this under acceleration -- either slight or heavy, or even driving slightly above idle RPMs. It won't start until about 2-3 minutes later, fires up just fine, but shuts off again.

I threw a few parts at it: new fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, IAC, spark plugs, oil, air filter. The MAP sensor is good, though I haven't checked out the EGR.

It acts like there is not enough fuel getting to the engine. So, I Tee'd a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line from the fuel pump so I could view it while driving. To my surprise, the fuel system held a constant 35 psi all the time, never wavered. Now, I'm not quite sure where to test next. Is it electrical? I'm not sure because sometimes when it stalls and after I keep the motor spinning (clutch engages) when I let the motor stop spinning, I get a backfire. Also, if I keep the clutch engaged, when it has shut off, the engine acts like it has been turned off, no sputtering or anything. I would understand this to possibly indicate adequate fuel but spark problems. But then why does it come back to life after the same amount of "down" time every time?

The thing is, it runs and revs and idles so smoothly, hot or cold. The is no check engine lights or error codes. I have many years auto diagnosing experience and I am a Mechanical/Electrical engineer. This one has me baffled and I don't want to tear it down without having path to follow. I'm thinking maybe "coil" issue? Help

I want to add to my post: I also installed new complete spark plug wires with the new spark plugs.

Hi,

Do you have a live data scan tool? If you do, see if you lost the RPM signal when it won't start. If you don't, see if the tachometer moves at all when cranking it and not starting.

I have a feeling you need a new crankshaft position sensor. Take a look through this link and let me know if you feel it mirrors what you experience:

Let me know.

Hi,

I noticed I didn't hear from you for a couple of days. Since tomorrow is Christmas, I didn't want to leave without knowing if you have made any progress. Not that I won't be here tomorrow but concerned if you needed the vehicle going and didn't want to miss a reply.

Let me know.

Take care and Merry Christmas,

Joe

The weather here has been an ice storm. I haven't picked up a new crankshaft sensor yet but I should be able to tomorrow or Monday. I'll let you know.

I totally understand. We have been dealing with subzero temps and high winds. Ugh! It has been miserable. LOL

Tomorrow is Christmas, so you may not find any parts stores open. I would wait until Monday and hope the weather gets better.

Let me know how you make out and if I can help.

Take care,

Joe

I finally have got back to work on my car. It is running great. Two things contributed to this: 1) A new CPS; and 2) I discovered a few female wire connectors in the multipronged plug that plugs into the spark plug/coil pack top cover that were recessed in the plug (in male plug on the cable). They were not making good contact, and were dirty causing intermittent opens in the circuits. Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to know you found the issue. Wiring problems seem to always become a nightmare.

Regardless, I'm glad it's running good for you.

Take care and feel free to come back anytime in the future.

Joe
