I starting getting a whining squeal under or near the back of the engine on the driver's side. It doesn't appear to be belts. What could be possible causes for a squealing noise in that location?

Hello,

It sounds like you might have an issue with the water pump or drive belt tensioner These are the only engine peripherals which are located on the drivers side. Please see picture below.

Easiest way to check if the water pump or belt tensioner a noisy is to use a stethoscope or long screwdriver. With the engine running carefully touch the mounting bracket of the belt tensioner or the water pump housing and listen as to which part makes the noise. Mind the drive belt, do not touch any rotating parts!

A good guide on how to diagnose noises is below.

Please let us know how you get along.

Thank you. I have an appointment with the auto shop on May 11. It makes things much quicker (and cheaper) when I can tell them what I suspect is the problem. Also makes it sound like I know what I'm talking about so I feel less likely to have them try and sell me something I don't need. I'm a woman, by the way, and I've already surprised them a couple of times by getting advice from you guys before I take the car in and telling them what I think it may be.
