Hi,

The pic is of the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley. The bolts should be installed unless you are taking things apart. The center one holds the balancer to the crankshaft, and I believe below the smaller ones secure the pulley.

Are you having problems?

Let me know.

Joe

I am trying to reinstall the crankshaft pulley but the notch on it is not lining up with the pin on the engine.

Hi,

Are you referring to the key on the crankshaft that the pulley slides over? Are you aligning the pulley with the key?

Please let me know. Pics will help also.

The white notch does not line up with the timing cover. I think I might have stripped the crankshaft pulley to where it doesn't line up anymore. Is that possible?

The timing is incorrectly set. You need to remove tension from the belt and then remove the belt unless you are able to get enough slack to move the crank independently.

I attached the directions below. Take a look through them and let me know if they are helpful. Also, the crankshaft sprocket is not likely damaged in any way.

Take care,

Joe

I'm having trouble figuring out how to get TDC aligned with the pulley. When I put everything TDC and installed the timing belt and cover, the line from the timing pulley is off by about 3 inches as you can see in the photo. I'm wondering if I might have untwist the pulley at the seal.

Hi,

Looking at the picture, it appears to be off by one tooth on the sprocket. (It's hard to be sure because of the angle.

Release a portion of the belt tension, just enough to be able to turn that pulley ahead until the marks match.

Let me know if that helps.

The mark was so far off I just ended up buying a new harmonic balancer. Installed it but the truck wouldn't start at first so I took the battery in and found out it was no good, so I bought a new one. After installing it, the truck turned on, however, it doesn't sound too good, and it started to overheat on me, but I can't find a leak. Working on this truck has been and continues to be a major learning experience, and I can only learn through trial and error. I replaced just about everything, went through two Nikki carburetors before making the conversion to Weber and it hasn't been as easy as I thought it would be, so I appreciate any help and advice you have to offer. Thanks

Hi,

Once you got it running, did you check ignition timing? It may need set.

Take a look through the directions below. It explains how to adjust ignition timing.

Also, if possible, record it cranking and running. Upload it for me to hear.

Let me know.

Joe

See pics below. Note: It indicates disconnecting the vacuum advance to the distributor which is correct. However, it doesn't indicate to plug the vacuum hose. Do that.

Update: So, the first image is the old crankshaft pulley you could see how it doesn't and wouldn't lime up. The second and third pics are of the new pulley, and you can see how it lines up. I am still trying to figure out why the truck is overheating. I will keep you updated. Thanks

Hi,

The pulley is keyed, so it should only go on one way. In pic 1, what doesn't align? Without the belt on it, you can place the two in any position. It appears the cam gear is aligned and the crank is at TDC. What is different about the new pulley? Also, there should be a mark on the crankshaft timing gear.

Let me know. I have a feeling you may be slightly out of time, but I need a little more info. If you reinstalled the belt with the marks where they are in pic 1, that should be right. I'm just not understanding what wouldn't work. (Sorry. Not being there makes it more of a challenge for me. I hope you understand.)

I attached a copy of your first pic below. It appears the timing mark on the pulley is directly in line with TDC on the cover.

Take care,

Joe

Finally got the truck up and going. It has been a very time-consuming process but a great learning experience. Your help has been very much appreciated and I thank you for responding to each of my questions.

Hi,

You are very welcome. I'm glad to know it's running well again. However, what was the ultimate cause of the issue?

Let me know.

Take care and good job.
