The brake pedal all of a sudden was spongy going to the floor board to stop. Please note there was no brake light on and we checked the brake fluid for leak and the fluid level was good. Next we brought the car into brake masters to troubleshoot and they said we needed the master cylinder replaced and brake line bled and flushed so we had the work done. After we picked up the vehicle at closing time and drove off the brake pedal still didn't feel right was spongy and in now the brake light turned on which wasn't on prior. When we got home we checked the brake fluid reservoir and it was almost empty, tried calling back brake masters but the didn't answer were already closed, next morning called and told them the car brakes were still doing same thing, and now brake light on & brake fluid low? We brought the
suv back and they said they tried bleeding the brakes several times to no avail and needed more time to figure out what's going on. End result the told us it's the ABS module and they don't do that type of repair we need to take it to the dealer. I told them I was now questioning if the work they did replacing the master cylinder was misdiagnosed and now out were almost $500.00. Anyways we went straight to the dealer to fix the car and told them what happened that brake masters replaced master cylinder and car still had same problem and concluded it's ABS module and only dealer can fix. Turns out the dealer mechanic says it's not the ABS module.

The problem is the master cylinder is bad and damaged power booster and need to replace the master cylinder and power booster cost $1,000.00 we ended up having them do the repair and picked up the car and again the car brake pedal is immediately spongy as driving home. It's going to the floor board? Contact the dealer to notify drop the car back to dealer did not hear back for a couple days. I call talk to service advisor who says the mechanic has tried several things and thought he had fixed it but turns out he still doesn't know. The service advisor apologized for this and said as soon as they know something he will contact me. Bottom line is I hear back after four days that the mechanic says it's the abs module and the part $550.00 and $300.00 to $400.00 for labor Now I'm questioning why this wasn't discovered from the first time we brought the car to the dealer after telling them that's what brake masters concluded and why the dealers mechanic ruled that out the first time when we initially brought the car in to dealer. I asked to speak to the mechanic to better understand how he has now arrived that it's the module that's the problem. The service advisor said mechanic is off until Monday. Note: service advisor told me it's not a code that came up because it's not an electrical problem it's a "hydraulic" one? Hoping you might be able tell me how do you diagnosis a bad ABS module and if this sounds correct based on what has happened with the car not being repaired properly for a third time? I don't want to get ripped off with another $900.00 misdiagnosed repair from inept troubleshooting. Sorry for this long question and thanks in advance.

Good afternoon.

What a mess. I am so sorry you have this issue with shops that are not diagnosing correctly.

Do you know if they did the automated bleeding procedure for purging the air? That is required to be done. Conventional bleeding will not bleed out the air. I attached 2 youtube videos for you to view.

If the system still has a low pedal, then they need to vice grip off the brake hoses to the wheels and see if the pedal gets better. If it does, then the issue is at one of the wheels. If it does not, it is either the master cylinder or the ABS unit.

Thank you very much Roy for your advice and quick response! I will try to find out from the mechanic which method he did to bleed the brakes and what else he did and hopefully this will lead to correct diagnosis. Thanks again for your help and the links you provided is much appreciated!

Hello Roy This is to update you about 2012 Dodge Journey brake issue. Still don’t have vehicle back from dealer! Turns out it wasn't ABS module, supposedly hydraulic problem and needed to replace the Hydraulic controller so we went ahead did that. Went back on July 16th to pick up and test drive, immediately knew something still wrong, brake pedal was sinking to floor. We alerted the service advisor and he had the mechanic who worked on car go with us and and test drive, as mechanic was driving and would step on the brake he said "yes" and confirmed the brake was fading, bleeding out, while still in the dealership parking lot, we didn't make it very far since one of the dealership employees was backing out of a parking space with a truck and backed into side of my car as the mechanic was test driving. The mechanic stopped to access any damage and the associate who back into us said sorry he thought we passed. Anyways damage was slight and the associate who backed out said he would take care of it himself and asked if we would agree to not involve insurance (lol a whole other story) anyways, the mechanic called his manager to report what happened Hello Roy This is to update you about 2012 Dodge Journey brake issue. Anyways damage was slight and the associate who backed out said he would take care of it himself and asked if we would agree to not involve insurance (lol a whole other story) anyways, the mechanic called his manager to report what happened & manager came out & at that time the mechanic told manager he had test driven car with us & the brake was still fading, bleeding out The manager said he needed to take this brake issue to higher level with corporate & engineering dept and see from there. Note: The mechanic did tell us that it could again be a faulty master cylinder or hydraulic controller, that he's seen this happen before with quality of parts issues! At this point I said that's crazy & he laughed and agreed. On July 20th contact advisor & "told engineers were involved & no word on what the issue is", on july 22nd contact service advisor for update & tells me "thinking its the master cylinder issue" on July 26th I contact service advisor via text for update tells me a "tech is still going through check outs that the engineers are giving him" I contact July 28th, told "they involved a second mechanic who is working with the other mechanic whos off that day so no news until he's back July 29th". On July 29t text at 4:37 pm if he has an update from mechanics and the response is "No information from the engineers today", next day July 30th get message to come in test drive the car, we arrive service advisor says take a drive & see what we think. My boyfriend tests drives & says right away it's still not right, a slight improvement when you initially press on brake it stops, but not at a correct level too low & while foot on brake noticeably fading. We notify the service advisor who says he test drove it and didn't notice anything & no problem leave the car & will see what's going on. Then I asked the advisor what had been done to fix the car that he wanted us to come in for a test drive. He said "they worked on bleeding issues & software updates". Because it's the dealer thought they would have the expertise to correct the problem & trying to be patient! They've had the car since June 25th, that's about five weeks! Losing confidence & feel like we're getting the run around! Wondering why it's so difficult for them to correct the brake pedal fade? Any advice would be appreciated! Note: we're the original owners of this 2012 journey & up until now never had any prior brake repair issues. Thanks for your help

Okay, I gave suggestions in my last response on the automated bleed sequence. Did they do that?

If it does not do it, I also suggested clamping off the lines to see if there is air in the system. Did they do that?
