Resistors have been added to spark plugs since at least the 1960's, and probably before that. The sole purpose is to reduce "radio frequency interference", (RFI) which shows up as loud static on AM radio. I am surprised your car came with non-resistor spark plugs. Those are normally only found on construction and lawn and garden equipment. You will also find resistance built into spark plug wires for the same reason, although on most newer cars, we have gone to individual ignition coils on each spark plug, and no separate spark plug wires. You will find regular metal wires in race car spark pug wires. For our daily drivers, the wires are actually a carbon-impregnated string. You do not need resistor spark plugs when you have resistor wires, but most cars generally come with both.
Switching to resistor spark plugs will not damage anything. That is what almost all cars and trucks use.
