My car has been making a squeaking sound, I don't drive it a good deal. I took it to the mechanic last week he said nothing wrong. I disagreed. It has been running alright except the noise. Which I thought possibly a bearing. I listen to my engine have had this car since new. I had to drive a ways today. Turned it off then when I turned it on I turned on the A/C after a minute. At that point there was a sort of explosion under hood, steam and I shut it off. No liquid anywhere. Could not find a popped hose or anything visually I could tell immediately. I turned A/C off and restarted it. It sounded fine (squeak gone) checked overflow for radiator watched temperature, oil etc, gauges. Don't know what to think. Don't think my mechanic knows or understands an SS Camaro or my 1996 Tahoe. The Camaro is the only car I have that runs right now. Cannot afford blown engine. Where do I start to look? No check engine light on. No trouble starting could it be the A/C blew and it was Freon. I need a good mechanic here in Phoenix not necessarily a shop that will charge me umpteen bucks for something that costs five to fix. I love this car have had it since new. I am really worried.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

It sounds like the AC compressor is the issue. Does the AC work not?

The pop may have been something with the clutch. Let me know if the AC is still working. Also, is the noise still gone?

Let me know.

Honestly I that was my first thought also, but I am fearful of trying to turn on the air. I tried checking to look for loose connections, holes, etc. There is a line on the hood that turned white (inside hood) where the steam hit it. No odor. No liquid runs across hood about where the water pump, clutch for AC is. AC clutch was my first thought. Is it safe to try to turn on AC? I suppose the worst thing is it won't. I felt all along it sounded like a bearing noise, if its safe to try running the car I will check to see if AC works and noise is missing or not. Recently had a new high pressure hose installed had worn through the metal. Also radiator, water pump around six months or so old.

Welcome back:

Based on how it happened, it really seems related to the AC compressor or clutch. Can you upload a pic of what you see under the hood? Also, I can't see what trying again would hurt. If the AC doesn't work, then we know that is the source.

Let me know.
