Mini was smoking whilst driving rac man has towed me home saying there are holes that look like have been melted through inlet manifold on engine which caused smoking from plastic melting. What would cause this as rac man had not come across this before? Also engine management light came on saying lack of power.

Hey JAN49,

Can you please attach photos of the affected areas of the intake?

You will definitely have a lack of power if there are holes in the intake manifold.

This will help identify what might be the cause.

Hey JAN49,

From what I can see online there may be a recall for the EGR system on your vehicle which can lead to excessive temperatures in the intake manifold and a lack of power.

I would contact a Mini dealer regards the issue, if covered by a recall the work may be covered and carried out free of charge.

Please let us know how you get go contacting the dealer if they have a known fix for this.

Regards, Joe

Hey JAN49,

Perfect, the dealer should be helpful. If there is a recall it pays for them to help you out.

Do let us know what response you get either way.

Best of luck.

Hi Joe,

Rang Mini they said there is no recall out on car and they are going to take a look at the car tomorrow. Which is costing  99 to diagnose problem. Then tell me what needs to be done and cost.

Hey JAN49,

There has definitely been a recall for EGR cooler leaks causing fires on BMW vehicles.

If the MINI dealer will not cover the work under warranty I would contact MINI UK and ask them about the issues with N47 engines and if the system is the same as in the BMW's with the same engine.

It's worth doing some digging on this, if you have to pay for the intake and potentially the EGR system to be replaced it will not be cheap.

Best of luck and hopefully you can get the work covered.

Let us know how it goes either way.

People may have a similar issue and people will appreciate your reporting on it.

Regards, Joe

Thank you Joe so much for all your advice and help I owe you a drink

Mini have now fixed my car and paid for my hired car whilst mine was being repaired and the repairs and I just had to pay for two hours diagnostic test.

So thank you again for your advice as without it mini wouldn’t have paid anything.

Regards,
Janice
