Tank had quarter fuel in. Was driving fine stopped for about an hour. Came back fuel smell was stronger car started drove for 300yards then cut out. Fuel light came on. Got car started opened bonnet and petrol was gushing out from the back of the engine and splashing over the spark plug cables. It's now at a garage I'm not familiar with.

You may have a failed fuel supply or return line if it id flowing fat i feel that it will be on the pressure side, all that you can do is inspect the line with an intrinsically safe light, that is a light that will not give a static spark, and check the line of a crack or a failed seal, if the mechanic dose this ask him to show you the exact failure so you know what is happening.
