Shifter will not Move unless I hit the overdrive reset button

Recently the shifter will not move unless I hit the overdrive reset button every time. I have checked the transmission fluid. This just started two days ago. What do I do?

Good afternoon

Do you mean the bypass at the shifter for getting it out of park? There is no overdrive reset button.

Can you post a picture of this button?

This is the button. You have to let up the console that houses the shifter.

That is the shift interlock.

Do your brake lights work? The brake light switch is what controls the interlock system.

When we push that button in. And I press the brake pedal. And the button on the shifter it will go into gear.

There is the solenoid on there that moves an arm.

The solenoid has most likely failed. In order to replace it, the entire shifter has to be replaced.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Description and Operation
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch

With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Voltage flows through the normally closed contacts of the automatic transmission shift lock control switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to be move out of the PARK position.

Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid.

The system consists of the park lock solenoid.

With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.

I do not know your ability but it is a little involved as the console has to come apart, the cables disconnected and the wiring released to access the bolts securing it to the brace.

So it has nothing to do with the shift linkage? It is a solenoid built into the shifter that allows it to move into gear when the brake pedal and the button is engaged correct? Like a safety feature. Currently I am overriding that feature by pressing in that button under the shifter.
