My gear had already been a little off! I have to pull the gear towards me while in park to take my key out! Now I went to town and made a stop now my car won’t leave out neutral! The gear will move so easily but it’s still stuck on (N)! What could b wrong?

Welcome to 2CarPros.

If the shifter is easy to move but isn't changing the gears, chances are either the shifter cable which connects the lever in the vehicle to the transmission has broken or come disconnected. I don't thing there is a problem with the shifter, but rather the shift control cable. Check it and let me know what you find.

Here are directions for removing the shifter. I am supplying them so you see how the console comes apart and to help you locate the cable. Check to see if it is still attached.

INSTALLATION

1. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Now, if the cable is properly attached and in good condition, we need to check the other end which is mounted on the transmission. If you can, get a helper to move the shifter while you watch to see if it is actually moving on the transmission.

The last picture is of the cable on the transmission. The cable is located right next to the transmission dip stick (a little to the left of it).

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Welcome back:

Is it the cable that what is coming off? If it is, a screw doesn't hold it on. There is a bushing and I believe a clip that holds it to the shifter. If you could get a pic of the part that is falling off, I can let you know.

Let me know,
Joe
