Light came on, report said emission problem. Checked at Ford dealer and told $600.00 for new fuel vapor canister and purge valve. Light was on about six days then went off yesterday. Filled with gas today, still no light. Vehicle report shows all good. Has it corrected itself or has the light reset? Dealership says no, must put new parts in. Not sure if I really need to cough up $600.00 or not? Please advise!

Good afternoon.

The code gets set when the internal test in the PCM for the EVAP system fails three times in a row. That is how the code is set. The diagnostics are correct as the dealer said. The PCM still tests the components and if they pass one of the tests, it will turn the light off. Then the tests continue until the next time it fails three times in a row.

It cannot fix itself at all. The issue still exists and will come back. It could take a day, week, month or longer but it will return and need to be addressed.

Okay, I have been waiting for one of these questions. 1 out of 100 of these actually need the canister, at my dealer anyways. But the purge valve (9c915) I change several on a daily basis. The issue is that the purge valve sticks open and draws a continuous vacuum on the fuel tank which in turn will draw raw fuel into the vapor line and saturate the canister, especially on a full tank of gas. And consequently cause kickback when trying to fill up the tank. I see this daily and wish I could tell customers to just buy the valve, 2 8mm bolts and two minutes. The only time I do a canister is when I find raw fuel when I pop off an Evan line or the customer complains of the notorious kickback click click when filling up. But not having hands on with your vehicle, I cannot guarantee it does not need both. Just here to share knowledge. Good luck.
