It sounds like you may have a pulley that is locking up. Clearly the A/C compressor is the first one that we need to suspect. If the belt is too loose and the alternator is not spinning fast enough and too tight and it squeals, then a seizing pulley sounds like the reason it may be breaking.
I would remove the belt again and spin all the pulleys by hand and see if any of them are tight. If they are let us know and we need to replace that one. If not we can figure something else out but this really seems like a pulley issue.
