security system locked

a couple times my security locked for which I had it towed the first time not knowing what the problem was, The next time I fixed it myself something like unhook the negative waited fifteen seconds turned the key to "on" three times horn honks and it starts up, The problem is I do not have the exact instructions any longer and I need to know exactly. Oh please can you help? Victoria
