I have an '02 Saturn with 90,000 miles, My check "Engine Light Soon" came on so I took it in to get scanned it came back with the error code 404 which they said was for the EGR Valve as soon as I pulled away the light went off. As I drive the gas gage drops not by much but after driving half a mile it should not move at all. I also at times smell gas. Is this something that could be something else besides the valve since the light has shut off. Also two weeks ago I had coolant all over the parking lot and to get my water pump replaced could there be any connection between the two items that when the water pump was replaced could have damage the valve?

Hello - Vanessa825

Once the codes were checked - did you start the car and then drive off and when you started the car the light came on for a few seconds and then went off?

As for the EGR code - I would suggest you change your EGR valve. You do have 90K on the car. You could spend money and have them perform a series of tests and I could even send those to you if you wanted. One from Auto Zone is about $129

If you smell gas you need to have your engine looked over really good. Look around the fuel injectors for any leaks. If you don't see any there the entire fuel systems needs to be looked at really good. With the engine running and not running. Leaking fuel can cause a fire..... We don't want that.

As for the water pump... No...I don't see where that is connected to the fuel or EGR. The water pump deals with the cooling of the engine... The EGR valve receives exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold and puts it back to the intake manifold.

Once I had the car scanned and then went to drive off when I started the car all the lights came on as they normally do for that 2 second moment and it shut off with all the other lights it did not stay on and then turn off while driving. It also has not come on since.

Hello - Vanessa825

Then what most likely happened is once they checked the codes they cleared them. So your light did then normal ops check and then off.

You may consider waiting for a second EGR code. Sometimes people do that. It is possible it had a piece of trash in it and that caused a delay in opening and closing so it threw a code.

That you could live with but please check into the fuel smell
