Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Saturn SL1 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

My Saturn idles high (about 2000 r.P.M.) And the Service Engine Soon light is on. Any suggestions? The parts store put a code scanner on it and it said there was a misfire on #1 cylinder, but it really doesn't miss while driving. Thanks!

Sounds like u have a vaccuum leak or a stuck or bad idle air control valve. Get some carb spray and spray around the intake manifold gasket and all the vaccuum hoses at idle if the rpms go up or the engine rpms go down or the car stumbles or dies u have a vaccuum like there where ur spraying. Also inspect that little s shaped hose that goes from ur valve cover to ur intake they colaspe and leak vaccuum if it's colasped or has a hole in it replace it. Let me know what u find.

Still no change. The codes areP1133 (switch ratio from rich to lean and lean to rich was below determined number), P0301 (misfire cylinder #1), P0134 (Oxygen sensor defective, engine misfire), P0130 (same as P0134), andP0507 (IAC, throttle body, vacuum leak), high idle. The small hose that goes from the intake manifold to the pcv valve on my SL1 single cam is straight. Could that be the wrong hose? Thanks!

having a straight hose to your pcv is fine as long as the hose is in good shape.its looking more like a vaccuum leak with the codes u have i would start by fixing the high idle and clear the codes and see which if any come back.since u have a code p0301 cylinder 1 missifire i would spray carb around the intake gasket of the number 1 intake tube where the intake meets the head.that would be located right by the power steering pump.also try tapping lightly on your idle air control valve its right on your throttle looks like a little motor and see if ur idle comes down.also on the p0301 trouble tree the spark plug gap is listed at .060" gap is really .040".let me know what u find.

I sprayed carb cleaner were #1 intake tube meets head and idle went up. I tapped on IAC with no change in idle. Approximately how much does it cost to replace intake gasket? Thanks for all your help!

Is there a temporary fix for it until I can afford to have a new gasket put on? Thanks!

Theres no temporary fix for a leaking intake gasket sorry. After you get that fixed then we can reset your codes and see if any of the codes come back. Also I want you to have someone look at it before they fix it and make sure that its just the gasket and not something else leaking vaccuum. Let me know how it goes and what you find.

A bad ect can cause a high idle but a steady 2,000 rpm all the time not very likely. There only 10 and it's pretty common for them to go bad. It wouldn't be a bad idea to change it there easy to change they just screw into the head. Make sure the engine is cold and get a brass tipped one the plastic tipped ones crack. You will lose coolant when you change it make sure you check the connector to it if it's corroded change the connector too. To cause the high idle like you have it's most likely a vaccuum leak you said you had a vaccuum leak on your number one intake gasket area. That would explain your code p0301 cylinder 1 missifire. You could also have a bad or stuck idle control valve. You could take that out and clean it get some carb spray clean the plunger on it and spray out the hole that it goes in. In the opening of the throttle body there's a hole that goes into where the idle air control valve sits so spray that out too. Let me know what you find.

Just got back from having condenser for a/c replaced. He charged a/c with freon. Idle is normal with a/c on (800-1100)r.P.M. As soon as I turn the a/c off, idle goes to 1700. If I have intake manifold gasket leak, would r.P.M. S drop that much? Thanks!

Have you tried taking off the the idle air control valve and cleaning it yet like i recomened?I posted a diagram for you where it is it's number 7.There's no telling if the rpm would drop that much when you turned on the a/c if you had a vaccuum leak never tried it.Also when you were spraying carb cleaner around the intake and you said the idle went up that means you have a vaccuum leak some where in that area you were spraying. Some thing is causing your idle to go up so you have to repair what you find and if your still having problems continue on looking. But if you don't fix what you find wrong then you will never find the problem or problems.Let me know what you find.

Mechanic replaced IAC. He said there was no intake vacuum leak. No codes for vacuum leak. Only code now was TPS. Still idles at 2000. Also, fan stopped working. Could ects cause fan to stop? Mechanic is stumped!

You could have a vacuum leak without a code I don't why he said that. When you get that high of idle the most probably cause is a vacuum leak or the iac. Also yes a bad ect can cause the fan not to come on when it get's hot when it's suppose too. When you turn on the a/c if it work's does the fan come on then?If so then I would replace the ect and inspect the connector for being corroded if it's corroded then replace the connector too.A bad ect can cause all kind's of differnt symptom's. There only 10 and it's pretty common for them to go bad. If you replace it make sure you get a brass tipped one the plastic tipped one's crack. Also what is the code number that your car has right now?

I don't know why he said there was no intake leak. He didn't tell me the code #, but the TPS code didn't come on the first time he checked, only after installing new IAC. He said it could be bad IAC, but I think that is unlikely. Before I ran out of freon, the fan came on when I turned on a/c. Now, the a/c keeps kicking off, probably because it is out of freon. The fan came on without a/c until a couple of days ago, after it got about 3/4 to the hot point (red). Thanks!

If the fan come's on with the a/c when the compressor kick's on I would try changing the ect. If you didn't have that tps code before he changed the iac maybe he left the tps unplugged when he changed the iac?I have never seen a bad iac set a tps code. Check and see if the tps is plugged in. On a earlier post I posted a diagram and it show's where the tps is and what it look's like. Also does your auto part's store like auto zone read code's for free?If so get your code's read and let me know what the number's are.
