Engine light stays on. What can cause this. This is a recent problem

An engine light can mean a lot of things, the only way to narrow it down is to have it scanned, if you live in california, you cant go to autozone for a free scan, but if you dont, go right down to autozone for a free scan, and and jot down the codes, bring them back to me for further diagnosis
