On occassions I have problems with my car shaking while driving at higher speeds. When this happens, my car seems to lose power and struggles to go above 60 mph. The brake pedal also becomes stiff. Once I pull off the highway, it drives completely normal at speeds around 40-50 mph. At times, I can also smell a burning odor.

We had this happen one time within the first 15 minutes of a longer trip. We pulled off the road, restarted the car, were able to continue on with the rest of our 2 1/2 hour trip with no incidents.

It also seems that everytime this has happened has been when I haven't allowed my car to "warm-up" for a few minutes before driving. Outside temperature, however, seems to not be an influence. Any ideas?

I haven't had any problems starting the car although we did have to purchase a new battery about a month ago. It doesn't usually struggle to shift gears except occassionally on steep hills. No lights on the dashboard either. I used to have issues with the car leaking / consuming oil quickly where it would burn through the oil in about 3 months. A mechanic fixed this about 6 months ago, and I no longer get the low fuel light. The problem I currently have has been on-going for a few months, but it is sporatic.
