1993 Saturn SC2 Trying to pass smog

My car is high in NOx and already reduced everything else egr was bad and changed it new one didn't work neither after warm wount hold vaccume tech told me to get an egr for an 88 chevy model that the egr is different. Im trying to find out if the EGR are ran with back pressure from the exhast?

GM does use a backpressure EGR. Was passageways cleaned when EGR was replaced? Is timing advanced?
