Im having a problem with my "Service Engine Soon Light" this light has been coming on for awhile. The code always seems to be something about the EGR valve, something excessive. My mechanic says that a lot of trash or whatever gets in, and found a cover with a screen on it. We were hoping that this would work, he put it in, told me to drive it about 40 miles and we would get it inspected. Well I drove it about 45 miles, and it wasn't ready for inspection, im like ok thats cool the light is still off will take it backlater after more driving. Well on the way home this light comes on again. It is a 97 SL and has 131,230 miles on it, and runs pretty nice.A little rough but im thinking its because of this EGR thing. Any help much appreciated.

Egr excessive flow? Carbon may be trapped, keeping the valve open? May need a valve?

NY state inspection?

Sounds like the Monitor probably hasn't ran yet. Was it actually run the the vip machine for inspection the second time?

North Carolina inspection, I believe I have had the EGr valve replaced a little while ago. It has been cleaned many many times, but soon after the light always comes back on. This cover? Pretty sure thats not what its call but has 3 holes in it. One big one in the middle that im guessing lets the oil flow through. He said it would be good to get one with a screen on it and finally found one. Put it on and like I said the light came back on while driving home. Maybe I can have him clean it again cause now that I think about it this time he just put it on and erased the code thinking the screen would fix it

 Didn't see that the light came back on.

Air is flowing through those holes.

Instead of cleaning the egr valve, since it is reasonably new, just have it warrantied and replace it.

Sorry I can't be of much help, maybe someone else can pick up on this.

You will have to pay labor again, but almost all parts carry at least a one year warranty.
