it cranks when cranked it runs real rough and when i put it in gear it shuts off.

Hi,
This can be the result of several things. The first thing we need to do is this. If the check engine light stays on when the engine is running, we need to scan the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video that shows how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but oftentimes a parts store will lend you one to use.
Let me know if this is something you can have done or do. If you can't, we will need to check one thing at a time until we figure out the cause.
