1992 Rover 25 Engine is cold, but temperature gauge is past

Car overheated yesterday, radiator was cold, engine hot, temperature gauge still on red after 24+ hours of car standing still. As soon as I turn the ignition on, before car starts, needle shots past the red mark and stays there. Thermostat is being changed, but why would the needle stay past the red mark on the temp gauge?

Replace the coolant temp sender switch. It is faulty

A simple case of unscrewing old sender swtich and screwing in the new .. it is located on the cylinder head near the thermostat housing .. I do not have a diagram as this vehicle was not released in the U.S. .. your local library or autoparts store will be able to supply a repair manual with instructions on the replacement !
