Restoring over heated engine

While going for a long run the engine was over heated and ceased, a lot of smoke emitting from the bonnet. While the engine is being overhauled with replacing the important parts what precaution has to be taken? Is it okay to face the cylinder head ?

I would suggest that you likely have far more damage than just the cylinder head and you would be a lot better off to look for a used engine for it.
