Renault Clio 1.4 W reg ; Speedo Falls To Zero

At speed my speedo will drop to zero and the mileage counter stops incrementing - however the car continues to perform with out change. Sometimes it recovers and is fine for many days, occassionally it keeps doing this - is there a 'majical' loose connection somewhere which will sort this little problem out ??
