Replacing rear brakes?

So, the car needed new brake shoes. Yes, rear shoes. Non-ABS model. I've swapped out wheel cylinders on cars before, but never had to do the shoes and all of that mess.

After much toil, hammering, and trouble, I got it done. But there are 2 burning questions. 1) each side has a spring on it that runs to the rear shoe from a piece of hardware. Not one of the springs that holds the shoes together and not the spring clip. It has a double hook on one side and a regular hook on the shoe side. I can't remember how that egoes for sure. I've got it in place where it's not coming out, but it doesn't "feel right." I'm thinking it has become too stretched to go into the holes that it's supposed to go into.

2) when adjusting the emergency brakes, how do I know I've got it set right without putting everything back on and trying to drive the car? I've got some tension in the brake handle and the cables and shoes are moving properly. When I have the drums on, I can't rotate the wheels by hand no matter how much of my 230 lbs I put into it. But when I go to drive the car, it has no trouble driving away. Clearly more adjustment is needed, but I don't want to overdo it.

By the way, whoever invented drum brakes should be cursed. 2 hours with if fighting to learn that job. But I can knock out a set of pads in 20 minutes.

Hi,

I'm looking in the manual, but I do not see what you described. I attached a picture below. Do you see the spring you are referring to? (See pic 5)

As far as the parking brake adjustment is concerned, it is done at the parking brake lever. The correct adjustment is based on the number of clicks from the handle. See pics 1-4 below.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

The spring is for the self-adjuster. The one end connects to the self-adjuster lever and the other (that looks odd) will attach to one of the brake shoes where there is a circle drilled into it. See pic below.

If this doesn't help, take a pic of what you have and upload it for me to see.

Take care,

Joe

I think this will help but it'll be at least Wednesday before I can open it up again. I have to use the car on the mail route unless I can get time to fix two flats on the other car. 1 tire has at least 5 plugs in it and comes back needing a new one every time I use it now. I think it's trying to retire. Also, that car needs two window regulators, an oil change, and a new key.

The life of someone who beats the heck out of their car for a living.

Well, I got around to one side of it this morning. Got it figured out and pieced it together. Nearly all assembled when I realized the lower spring had come loose. Took things back apart to take care of that. And then shit went to hell and it took me an hour+ to get the dirtiest puzzle ever reassembled. But I got it. And I got the e-brake adjusted (I think, didn't really test it but there's good tension in the lever). I'm attaching pics of what it looks like for future reference. After all, there are still millions of these cars out there (Chevy/Geo Prizms and Toyota Corollas) so it may come up again for you. I'll get better pics when I fix the other side some day (maybe next Thursday, when I also try to patch the brand-new giant exhaust leak that makes it sound sporty).

Hi,

Thanks for the update. Also, you're correct. There are a lot of them left and on the road. It's funny that you had trouble with the parking brake springs. I was lucky enough to replace them on my wife's vehicle last night and in the dark. I felt the same way you did.

Regardless, thanks again for the update and feel free to come back anytime in the future.

Take care,

Joe
