Hi,
I know this website is more for car repair inquires but I wanted to ask more of a sales question. I am looking to purchase a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GL SE it retails for 21,349 without taxes and with taxes and freight/delivery its $25,630.10 (including a $500.00 rebate discount). The dealership no longer has new 2018 Elantra's so they have offered me a demo car with 0% interest and $500.00 off (rebate). It has 8,995 km on it and they are offering me a $1,200.00 discount from the retail price. I have read that I should look for a 20% discount and it here it looks like they are offering me much less than that. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Normally, as you know, we focus on repair questions. However, I will try to help.

If they are only taking $1,200.00 off retail, they are not saving you any money. Now, if they take $1,200.00 off dealer cost, that would be different. Keep in mind, the dealer did not pay retail for the vehicle, so there is a mark up. Since it was a demo and has miles, I would ask them to show you dealer cost and not retail and tell them they need to deduct $1,200.00 from their cost. Otherwise, and I am being honest, most any new car dealer will offer you an unused car for around $200.00 over cost which would most likely work out to around the same as you are paying for the demo.

Do this, tell they you are willing to pay $200.00 over cost on a 2019. If they cannot do it, tell them you will try a different dealer. Be kind but firm. Also, make sure they are willing to show you the dealer cost information on either one you want to purchase.

I hope this helps. Take care,
Joe

Thanks a lot for your reply, I really appreciate it. What would be a reasonable discount to request off the dealer cost?

Okay, I was using US dollars as a reference. I would ask at least 5% off dealer cost.
