Audi recommends the higher octane fuel for a couple reasons. First and most importantly, it is more refined. As a result, it is less likely to leave deposits in the fuel system and allows smoother performance from the engine design. Concern areas include, but are not limited to, valves, injectors, fuel pump and so on.
Next, the engine compression plays a role in this. Lower grade fuel can allow for valve knock or damage. If the car is turbo charged, I strongly using what they recommend. I own two of them and always spend the extra 5 bucks per tank to fill-up.
