Most power seats have three motors and three sets of switches, and all three won't fail at the same time. If your seat only has forward and backward, then there is just one motor that could fail but the switch will have four contacts. If one fails the seat will only move one way until it gets to a mechanical stop. At that point if you tried to go further you would hear the motor click or strain and you'd see the interior lights dim.
The fastest way to get started is by measuring the voltages to the motor's plug. One of the wires will have 12 volts in one direction and the other wire will have 12 volts in the other direction. When one wire has 12 volts the other one is the ground, so a break in either wire will prevent the motor from running in either direction.
If neither wire has 12 volts when you press the switch, the most common cause for cars with switches on the doors is a broken wire between the door hinges.
