Is there a easy way or special tool to take out the retaining ring that holds the thermostat in place off the housing. I have limited space to fit a retaining clip pliers.

So this is the biggest pain in th rear. You need special ring pliers to get these out, because there is no room to remove it. Try www.944online. Com for the right tool.
