My 2000 Pontiac Montana with 180,000 km has developed a transmission fluid leak at the vent assembly located at the top of the transaxle (model 4T65E). Now I know this is unusual because I could not get much information to this type of leak on the internet or at my local library. My research tells me that there may be an internal leak forcing the fluid to this vent and the most likely problem is that the Channel plate gasket needs replacing. As a DIY’er I was hoping that it was only the pan gasket, making my problem easier but no such luck. My questions are, how much should this repair cost? And is this a common type of leak?

I have done several of these channel plate gaskets for the leak that you are having. The top gasket is what breaks and the fluid sprays right at the vent. The trans has to come out in-order to complete the repair. I would say that you are probably going to be looking at a bill in the 1,000 to 1,200 dollar range. The gasket is cheap but the labor is whats going to get ya.
